Holiday Club 2008

On Monday 4^th August a team of 50 (principally from our home church in Horley) started a four day Holiday club that had been in preparation for a long time. The aim of the club was to bring the gospel to the children of Dorohoi, whilst giving them a fun time. The venue was School Nr 8 which the Town authorities kindly allowed the team to use during the day and for three evenings there was a meeting in Dorohoi Baptist Church.

There were two sessions each day - the morning session for 6 - 11 year olds and the afternoon session for 12 -14 year olds. The activities included sport, craft, and then a joint event, when the groups came together for fun, some songs and a bible story each day focusing on a different character.

Each morning there was a buzz of excitement that grew more and more over the four days of the event with children gathering at the gates of the school and at the Centre long before each session was due to begin. Numbers grew from around 150 on the first day to over 400 on the last! There was such an amazing atmosphere (and noise!) in the sports hall where the sports event took place. The joint event also took place in the hall and one end was made to look like a big top. The craft sessions were held in some of the classrooms.

On the last day as each session finished each child was given a copy of a children's bible according to age and other literature which had been donated by The Bible League Romania.

In the evening for three nights there was a more evangelical meeting in the Baptist Church which was linked to the theme of the day. By the third evening there were 120 children attending the meeting, and on the last evening each child was given a copy of John's gospel.

The whole event was a huge success and the children who visit the playground at the Centre, come to Clubul GLIA on a Saturday Morning, can often be heard singing many of the songs that they learnt at the Holiday Club.

We are grateful to the staff at school Nr 8, and the teenagers who came to help with translation etc. Two or three of them help with the club on a Saturday and have definitely learnt from the way everything was organised at the Holiday Club.

We are also grateful to the team who gave up time and put so much effort into giving the children of Dorohoi such a fun time.
